An AC that needs refrigerant every summer in Malibu has a leak, and topping it off again only pays for the next one. AC leak repair means finding the hole, fixing the part it is in, testing that it holds, and then charging the system. Malibu Coast AC Repair does that on coastal and canyon homes, with the estimate in writing before work begins.
What a leak repair is priced on
There is no flat price for a leak, because leaks live in different places and need different repairs. Your estimate comes from:
- Where the leak is: a valve core, a brazed joint, the line set, the outdoor coil or the indoor coil.
- What the fix takes: a tightened fitting, a new valve, a brazed patch, or a replacement coil.
- The refrigerant your system uses and how much it needs after the repair.
- Access to the coil, the attic or the pad.
The tech finds the leak first, then prices the fix. You approve it before any work. To book the search, send your model number and the date of the last recharge through the leak repair form.
Why we fix the leak instead of topping it off
An AC system does not use up refrigerant. If the charge is low, it is escaping somewhere. Adding more without finding the leak means you pay for refrigerant that drains back out, and the system runs short of charge in between. Running low can ice the coil and overheat the compressor, which turns a leak repair into a far bigger bill.
So the job runs in order. We confirm the charge is low with gauges, find the leak with an electronic detector, bubble solution or a nitrogen pressure test, repair it, hold pressure to prove the repair, pull a vacuum and recharge to the right amount. You get a system that keeps its charge.
Where coastal leaks show up and what each repair involves
Salt air and moisture make some parts leak more often near the water. Here is where we tend to find them and what the fix looks like:
| Leak spot | What the repair involves |
|---|---|
| Service valve or valve core | Replace the core or cap; often the smallest repair |
| Brazed joint at the condenser | Recover the charge, re-braze, pressure test |
| Outdoor coil pitted by salt | Coil replacement, or a condenser replacement if the cabinet is gone too |
| Indoor evaporator coil | Coil replacement at the air handler or furnace |
| Line set rubbed or kinked | Repair or replace that section of line |
| Flare fitting on a mini split | Remake the flare and retest |
A pinhole in a salt-pitted outdoor coil is the hardest case. Patching one spot rarely lasts when the rest of the coil looks the same. In that case we write the coil replacement and a full condenser replacement as two options. Our AC repair page lists the rest of what we handle.
R-22 and newer refrigerants
Older systems in Malibu beach houses often still run on R-22. R-22 is no longer produced, so a recharge after the repair depends on reclaimed refrigerant. That limits supply, and on a unit with more than one leak it changes the math. We put a repair and a replacement on the same estimate for those systems.
Newer split systems are made with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32. They need the right tools and handling, and our techs carry them. Tell us the model when you book so the truck has the right refrigerant on board. If the answer is a new system, our AC installation page covers the replacement side.
After the repair, a spring AC maintenance visit checks the charge again, so a new leak shows up before the hot weather.
FAQ
How do you find an AC leak?
We confirm the charge is low with gauges, then search with an electronic detector, bubble solution or a nitrogen pressure test. On a mini split we check each flare fitting at the heads and the outdoor unit.
Can a leaking coil be repaired, or does it need replacing?
A single leak at a joint can often be brazed. A coil pitted by salt in many places usually needs replacing, since patches do not hold on the rest of it.
Is it worth fixing a leak on an R-22 system?
Sometimes, if it is one leak and the rest of the unit is sound. R-22 depends on reclaimed supply, so we price the repair next to a new system and let you compare.
Will you just add refrigerant if I ask?
We will not recharge a system that is losing charge without looking for the leak first. A recharge on its own drains back out and can damage the compressor.
How long does a leak repair take?
A valve core or a fitting is often done on the same visit. A coil replacement depends on getting the coil in stock, and we tell you the wait on site.
