Every gas or propane furnace sold carries an AFUE rating, expressed as a percentage, and it is one of the more straightforward efficiency standards in HVAC because the number means almost exactly what it sounds like. AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, and it tells you what portion of the fuel's energy actually becomes usable heat inside your home, as opposed to being lost up the flue or through cycling losses.
